Chapter 673
Abbey seemed swamped and hadn't picked up the phone.
Losing patience, Marguerite called again. The ringtone went on forever before Abbey's frazzled voice finally
cthrough.
"Hello, Stonebridge City Police Department, Abbey speaking. How can | help you?"
"Ms. Abbey, it's Marguerite. | just received a package from the police station and was wondering if Penelope's
phone data has been retrieved. The call recording | have only includes my voice. What about hers?"
At Marguerite's prompting, Abbey sounded even more frustrated:
"We're having a hard twith Penelope's phone. She had sserious anti- eavesdropping software installed,

something."
So, that was it!
Marguerite had hoped for sresults today.
She hung up, feeling helpless. But then, Miley noticed something beneath the transcript of the phone recording a
statement from the police declaring Marguerite's innocence.
Miley, puzzled, said, "Marguerite, I'm confused. Why did you want my mother-in- law's recording? Your own
recording clearly proves that you had ended the call before her accident happened. In other words, Penelope's
crash has nothing to do with you. So, what's the point of having her recording?"
Marguerite met Miley's baffled gaze.
She realized that since Penelope's accident nearly two weeks ago, Miley had been through the worst of it and
was starting to think more clearly. There seemed no point in hiding the truth any longer.
So, Marguerite spent the next half hour explaining the whole story of that day at the police station, including
Abbey's deductions.
Miley was visibly shaken, turning pale and then flush with anger:
"Are you saying my mother-in-law's death might have been murder?" Marguerite nodded, her expression somber.
Miley was furious. "This is outrageous! Who would be heartless enough to do such a thing to my mother-in-law!
Robert always said she was well-liked, didn't have a single enemy! These past few days, with Hackett sick, all the
big shots from Stonebridge City have been visiting him. Sof the ladies were even crying their eyes out!"
The more Miley spoke, the more unsettled Marguerite felt.
"To be honest, I'm completely clueless. | desperately want to know what Penelope was trying to tellbefore
the accident, and who it involved. If | could just figure that out, | wouldn't feel so lost."

Without hesitating, Miley blurted out, "Whatever she wanted to tell you, it had to be about you!"
"About me?"
"What else! If it was about someone else, why would she cto you? It must be because something you're
involved in threatened someone else's interests. She was in a hurry to tell you, and that's what led to this
tragedy."
Miley's analysis echoed Abbey's, leaving Marguerite even more confused.
"If that's the case, | don't think | could ever forgive myself."
"Why would you blyourself for the actions of a criminal? Marguerite, this is a critical moment; you can't
afford to take everything upon yourself like skind of martyr. We need to stay focused and solve this mystery
together! My mother-in- law's death can't be in vain!"
