Chapter 39 Things didn't go as planned. Denise's flight had a hiccup and got delayed. She tried to call Harvey from the waiting area, but his phone was switched off because he was in the middle of a court hearing.

It wasn't until lunchtwhen the hearing ended that Harvey turned his phone back on and saw Denise's message. He frowned as he processed the information.

An assistant to his client, Mr. Hughes, approached him respectfully saying, "Attorney Horigan, our boss would like to invite you to lunch." Harvey put down his phone and replied with a nonchalant smile, "Please express my gratitude to Mr. Hughes! I have surgent matters to attend to, I'm afraid I can't make it." Just as they were talking, Mr. Hughes himself cover.

Mr. Hughes, a businessman in his forties with a refined appearance, shook hands with Harvey and said warmly, "Harvey, you were brilliant in court. I won't keep you if you have important matters to attend to! Next tyou're in town, letshow you shospitality." "Absolutely!" Harvey responded, ever so charming.

Mr. Hughes thought highly of him and had his own driver take Harvey to the airport. Denise's flight was delayed for half a day, so she decided to catch the sflight back with Harvey.

Before the plane took off, Harvey tried calling Eloise again. But her phone was still off.

He frowned, something must be up! Over in Peterborough, Eloise had been staying in all day. Michelle was emotionally unstable, so she spent a lot of twith her. By evening, she made dinner for Michelle. As they were eating, Eloise softly said, "I'm meeting a friend later, someone Veronica introduced. They might be able to help us." Michelle was a bit skeptical.

Eloise held her hand and said, "Really! Michelle, I want to give it a shot." Perhaps Eloise was very convincing, and Michelle believed her.

After dinner, Eloise went back to her room and pulled out a photo album from a big box. She gently opened it to find a picture of her mother when she was young.

Eloise stroked the photograph. Her mother passed away when she was ten, and a year later her dad married Michelle. Eloise remembered her dad and Michelle fighting a lot then. Once, Michelle cried really hard, questioning him why he was so good to someone else's child and didn't want to have a child of their own. That was when little Eloise realized that she wasn't their biological daughter. She was scared, scared of being abandoned all of a sudden. Whenever her dad and Michelle weren't fighting, she would act spoiled and say she wanted a little brother or sister.

But Michelle never got pregnant.

Michelle loved Eloise's dad and had raised Eloise as her own. She was always kind to Eloise. How could Eloise let such a woman go to jail for eight or ten years? A tear dropped onto the photo, and Eloise quickly wiped it off.

Michelle saw from the doorway. Her expression darkened, and she tried to sound as gentle as possible, "Didn't you say you have an appointment? Why don't you freshen up a bit before you go?" Eloise closed the album and put it away. She stood up, changed into a new set of clothes, and couldn't help but hug Michelle before she left.

Michelle felt uneasy. But when Eloise lifted her head, there was a faint smile on her face. She said that the person Veronica introduced was very capable, and that Max would probably respect them. That was when Michelle finally let her go with peace of mind.

Eloise closed the door behind her and leaned against it for a long while.

She had just sold herself out!

It was dusk outside, and the clouds painted the sky with a gorgeous yet desolate red shade. Elbise watched the view quietly for a long tbefore she got on the bus.

By the tshe arrived at Max's villa, it was already 8 pm. Max was sitting on the couch in a three-piece suit, sipping his drink. The chandelier above him cast a luxurious light, highlighting his handsface even more. Eloise would have been smitten if it was before. But now, she only felt repulsed.

Max's voice was low as he asked, "Where have you been I've been calling you all day! Chapter 39 Tip: You can use left, right keyboard keys to browse between chapters.
