Chapter 115

-Ava’s POV

My head throbbed as thought my skull had been caught in a vice and my wolf growled softly in the back of my

mind. She wasn’t helping. In fact, she never did. Ever since she beca part of me, it felt like she was nothing

but a constant judge, standing on simaginary pedestal, looking down onas it were beneath her.

“What are you doing. Ava?” she hissed, her disapproval dripping rough every syllable.

| shut her out. | didn’t need this. Not now. If she didn’t want to be helpful, then she could sit in silence. She'd

been frowning, upon my every decision since the moment | got her, and tonight was no exception. She was

judgingfor this choice, just as Isabella had been when she'd tried to stopfrom leaving with... what was

his nagain?

“Con, sweetheart. This way.”

The man tugged my arm gently, guidingtoward the shadows of the street. His voice was smooth, practiced,

like someone who'd done this before.

| forced a smile onto my lips, ignoring the slurred quality of my voice as | asked, “Where exactly are we going?

Where's your car?”

The haze of alcohol dulled the sharp edge of unease that was beginning to creep in.

“We don’t need a car,” he said, still pullingalong. “My place is just around the corner.”

That little voice of reason, buried under layers of denial and intoxication, shot up one last time: This is a bad

idea. Go home, Ava.

lignored it. | shoved it down as deep as it could go, locked it in a box, and threw away the key. Instead, | let

myself be led, the sounds of the night growing quieter as we left the main street behind.

We turned a corner, and before | knew what was happening, he shovedhard against the wall. The rough brick

scraped against my back, and a startled gasp escaped my lips.

“What are you-"

His hand clamped over my mouth, cutting off my words. “Don’t pretend like you don’t want this. Just shut up,”

he growled. Panic shot throughlike an electric shock. The alcohol fog evaporated in an instant, and my

senses sharpened to crystal clarity. My wolf snarled, her presence suddenly roaring back into focus.

Push him off. Now.

| shoved him as hard as I could, but he didn’t budge. He was stronger than he looked, and the smug grin on his

face toldhe knew it.

My wolf growled louder, her voice becoming one with mine as | pushed again, harder this time. To my shock, he

flew backward, crashing against the opposite wall with a thud.

He groaned, glaring atas he stumbled to his feet. “You'll regret that,” he spat, his voice laced with venom.

| took a step back, my claws extending involuntarily. “I'm giving you a chance to walk away,” | warned, my voice

low and trembling with adrenaline. “You won't like what happens if you don’t.”

He laughed, the sound cold and mocking. “What are you gonna do? Scratchwith those fake things?”

He lunged for me, and instinct took over. My claws slashed through the air before | could stop them, and the

world seemed

to slow as | watched hireyes widen in shock.

He stumbled back, clutching his neck as blood poured between his fingers. He gasped, his mouth opening and

closing like a fish out of water, as though he couldn't comprehend what had just happened.

“No...” The word fell from my lips, barely audible.

| dropped to my knees beside him, my hands hovering uselessly as blood pooled around us. “No, no, no. Please. |

didn’t mean to. | didn’t mean

He gurgled, his eyes locking onto mine. The disbelief in thein was like a dagger to my chest. | wanted to help

him, to fix it, but | knew it was too late. The life drained from his eyes, and his body went limp.

The silence that followed was deafening.

For a moment, | was frozen, staring at the lifeless body in front of me. Then the reality of what I'd done slammed

intolike a freight train.

| scrambled to my feet, backing away as if putting distance between us could somehow make it less real. My

hands shook violently, and my wolf whimpered in the back of my mind, her presence a painful reminder of the

power I'd unleashed.

I turned, and that’s when | saw

Grayson.

him.

He stood a few feet away, his expression unreadable. | didn’t know if it was the alcohol still lingering in my

system or sheer disbelief, but for a moment, | thought | was hallucinating.

“I didn’t... He tried to...” My voice cracked as | stumbled over the words. “I didn’t mean to kill him.”

He didn’t respond right away. Instead, he stepped closer, his presence steady and commanding. Without a word,

he guidedtoward his car, his grip firm but not unkind then pushedin while he made a phone call.

| sat in the passenger seat, staring at my bloodstained hands. The smell of iron was overwhelming, and my

stomach churned. | didn’t look at him when he eventually slid into the car, his scene overwhelming my senses.

“You're nothing to him, Ava,” | reminded myself bitterly.

The silence stretched on until he finally broke it. “I've called my men. They'll take care of it. There'll be no trace

of you connected to this.”

did.

That was what it took forto snap out of it. The words spilled out ofbefore | could stop them. “Of course,

you Did it ever occur to you that maybe | don’t want it taken care of? That maybe | want to take responsibility for

what I've done?” My voice rose, trembling with emotion. “I killed someone, Grayson. I'm not like you. | have a

conscience.”

| glanced around the interior of his car, the suffocating luxury only amplifying my frustration. “I don’t even know

why I'm here. | shouldn't be here.”

“Ava-" he began, but | wasn’t about to let him finish.

“No,” | snapped, cutting him off. “Thank you for your help, which I didn’t ask for, but I'll be on my way now That

way, | can get back to being absolutely nothing to you.”

His expression shifted-anger, hurt, and something else | couldn't quite name. He stayed silent as | fumbled with

the seatbelt, my hands trembling too much to make it work. My frustration grew until finally, he spoke again, his

voice low and steady.

“Elaine found out,”

| froze, my fingers stilling on the latch. “Found out what?”

“That | started the fire that night,” he said, his tone even, though could hear the tension beneath it. “That | was

the one responsible for killing her parents. | only told her what she wanted to hear, but | didn’t mean it.”

| stared at him, the weight of his words sinking in like stones. My heart pounded in my chest as | processed what

he'd just admitted but I shook it off refusing to continue the cycle, “Well I'm sorry you're having problems with

your cousin, Grayson, but it doesn’t change the fact that you did say it.”

Finally, the seatbelt cundone, the click sounding louder than it should in the tense silence. “You know, | was

willing to let go of the whole ‘not wanting kids thing. | was willing to compromise. But now? Now | don’t just not

want to speak to you -1 don’t want to see you. I'll cto get my things tomorrow-my things, not the ones you

bought. And I'd appreciate it if you didn’t do anything to stop me.”

“Ava, don’t-"

| kept going, my words spilling out like a dam had broken. “I'll start the divorce process again. Thanks for the

added stress, by the way. Maybe now you can marry Monica, and the two of you can live happily ever after with

Elaine. Though I'd recommend counseling first, so you don’t screw that up too.”

Grayson let out a long, tired sigh, running a hand through his hair. “I know you're upset, but you can’t keep

throwing divorce in my face every twe fight.”

“Don’t worry,” | said, pushing open the car door. “This will be the last time.”

| stepped out into the night, slamming the door shut behind me. He didn’t try to stop me, and | didn’t look back.

The cool air hit my skin, but | barely felt it. My mind was racing, my thoughts a jumbled mess of guilt, anger, and

despair. Werewolves killed all the time-accidentally or not. To them, it was nothing. But the man I'd killed was

human, and that made it different. That made it unforgivable.

| deserved to be punished.

| walked for what felt like hours, the blood on my hands drying and cracking as the weight of what I'd done

pressed down on me. When | finally reached the police station, | didn’t hesitate. | pushed open the door and

walked straight to the desk where a woman sat, her focus on a stack of papers in front of her.

“I'm here to report a crime,” | said, my voice steady despite the storm inside me.

The woman looked up, her gaze traveling overuntil it landed on my hands. Her eyes widened as she took in

the bloodstains, but before she could speak, | continued.

“My nis Ava Pierce,” | said, standing taller despite the quiver in my chest. “I'm twenty-four years old, and |

just killed someone.”
