Chapter 62 A Look Of
Concern
“Miss Murray,” Hadley responded with a light shake of her head, her smile tinged with mild amusement. “Please
excuse my frankness, but your father is a grown man-divorced and single. It’s entirely up to him whom he
decides to be with now. Even as his daughter, it’s not your place to meddle.”
Vera's expression contorted with shock. “So you won't leave him?”
Steadily meeting Vera's incredulous look, Hadley remained resolute. “Correct. | will stay unless Mr. Murray tells
“You-!"
Vera's anger intensified beyond her initial fury as she stormed in. Her brows knitted tightly together, her face
twisted with rage.
“You have no shame! Do you think you can just charm men and get what you want with your looks? Well, watch
this! I'll make sure you can’t deceive anyone else after I'm through with you!”
In a surge of anger, Vera lunged at Hadley, seizing her hair with a fierce grasp.
“Ah!” A sharp pain radiated through Hadley’s scalp, causing her to cry out, her face contorting in agony. “What
are you doing? Let go of me!”
“Let go?” A dark, menacing laugh escaped Vera. “Feeling frightened now? It’s too late! Just wait until I'm finished
with you!”
Hadley wasn’t about to passively endure the attack. She swiftly grabbed Vera's wrist, attempting to loosen her
grip.
“You think you can hit me? Didn't your family ever teach you the consequences of being a home-wer?” Their
struggle intensified, turning into a fierce tangle of limbs.
Caught off-guard, Lennon was at a loss.
“Stop this! Miss Murray, think what will happen if your father learns of this-"
“Let him find out!”
Vera's defiance was evident. “Do you really think my father would choose a cheap dancer like her over his own
daughter, even if | went too far today? That's laughable!”
Reluctant to physically intervene, Lennon looked desperately to the others. “Someone help separate them!”
“Right!”

Several women rushed to intervene, trying to pry them apart.
However, their intervention only escalated Vera's rage.
Breathing heavily, her eyes wild with anger, she scoffed, “You've got help? Good! Let's see how you manage
now!”
In a frantic assault, she dove forward again—this time, her fingers clenching tightly around Hadley’s neck.
Hadley gasped for air, feeling her windpipe compress under the vicious hold. Intense pain radiated through her
neck as her surroundings began to fade. Her vision swirled, her thoughts evaporated,
It dawned on her then-this was no mere outburst. Vera was really intent on killing her.
No she couldn't let herself be killed.
She silently pleaded for rescue.
As darkness nearly claimed her, Hadley caught sight of Vera's insane smile.
“Can't breathe? Then let's just get it over with! You think you can latch onto my father and enjoy an easy life?
Did you ever stop to think that the money he squanders on you belongs to me? What a joke!”
Her voice seemed to drift further away, and Hadley resignedly thought. “So, this is how | go...”
“Release her!”
At the brink of losing consciousness, a burst of motion caught Hadley’s attention-a towering, formidable figure.
Eric. His face was a storm of anger, his aura overpowering.
He moved quickly, grabbing Vera's wrist in a firm grasp that appeared almost effortless.
“Ah-!" Vera's cry pierced the air as she abruptly let go.
Suddenly, Hadley could breathe again; air rushed back into her lungs, triggering a harsh bout of coughing as she
gasped and clutched her neck, her body shaking violently.
She lost her strength and slumped to the floor.
“Hadley!”
Worry and fury were etched deep into Eric's expression.
He quickly lifted her into his arms, cradling her gently. He soothed her with a soft pat on the cheek. “Are you
alright?”
Hadley could only shake her head, still struggling for breath.
Eric's gaze then snapped to Vera, his eyes a whirlpool of dark fury.
“How could you harm her?” His tone was sharp as frost. “Unable to rein in your disgraceful father, you lash out at
an innocent woman instead?”
Vera recoiled but retorted sharply, “And who might you be? Just another one of her admirers? It figures. Men like
you thrive in humiliation.”
Eric's laugh was bitter, and he held Hadley closer, his hands tensing around her.

“Were you not a woman,” he said bluntly, “do you think you'd still be able to stand before me, hurling insults?”
Vera stood motionless.
The man’s voice was even, but the underlying threat was clear.
“Disappear, now!” he commanded, losing his temper. His voice turned to a threatening rumble, laden with
revulsion. “Leave before | forget my restraint concerning violence against women.”
Vera's courage waned, her voice shaky. “You... Okay! But this isn’t over!”
She no longer dared to retort. Casting a final resentful look, she hastened to her feet and fled.
Eric's attention returned to Hadley, cradled in his arms, her complexion ghostly. “Hadley, can you tellhow
you're doing?”
Hadley attempted to speak but no sound emerged.
More than that-her throat felt as though it was on fire, as if every breath was drawing flames through a torn and
tender passage.
Tears sprang to her eyes instantly.
Shit!
Eric's features tightened, veins on his forehead standing out prominently. Quickly, he shifted his grip to carry her
more securely.
His tone turned gentle, yet resolute. “Don’t worry. We're heading to the hospital now. Everything will be alright.”
Clutched to his chest, Hadley felt disoriented.
Was she seeing things? There seemed to be a look of concern on Eric's face, and was that... sorrow?

It must be her imagination.
At the hospital, a detailed examination of Hadley was performed.
The doctor's expression grew concerned as he reviewed the scans.
“Her vocal cords and soft tissues are damaged.”
Observing the extent of the injuries, the doctor cast a wary glance at Eric, as if suspecting him of foul play.
Eric's expression grew stern. “Can we focus on what to do next instead of casting criticism?”
“She will recover,” the doctor said. “However, she requires medications-both pills and creams. Most crucially,
she must avoid speaking for stime. Attempting to talk will cause her pain and could worsen the condition.
She needs complete vocal rest.”
Was it that severe?
A storm seemed to gather in Eric's eyes.
Could Duran’s daughter really have intended so much harm?

The doctor passed him a prescription. “Take this and get her the necessary medications.”
“Understood.”
Eric looked over at Hadley with a firm tone. “Stay here. I'll be back with your medications.”
As he moved towards the pharmacy, a memory halted him-a previous hospital visit where he had merely
stepped out to settle a bill, only to return and find her missing.
He spun around, his tone edged with a warning. “Don’t even think about leaving before | return. Understand?”
Hadley gave a feeble nod.
Reassured, he left.
Returning later with the medicines, Eric watched as the doctor applied the cream. “Just about this much every
time,” instructed the doctor.
“Understood,” Eric responded.
He then looked at Hadley, his expression inscrutable. “Let's go.”
Hadley pressed down on the chair, trying to lift herself.
Yet, as she pushed, a stabbing pain shot through her chest, abruptly cutting off her breath.
Eric glanced back, irritation evident in his furrowed brow. “Honestly, you're such a burden. Tell me, Hadley, what
are you good for besides causing trouble?”
